A week of fun and frolicing

Aliah had her first play date on Sunday, February 2nd at a little park in town.  Her friend Lily brought her scooter, and Aliah fell in love.  We ended up ordering her one as an early birthday gift, and she's now addicted.

Our 18th wedding anniversary was 2/2/2020.  Shawn and I went out for a few hours that afternoon.  It was sunny and 70 degrees.  We usually spend our anniversary at the Wisconsin Corn/Soy Expo at the Kalahari in the Dells, so this was very special year!

Both girls were a little teary on Monday before school.  Aliah's been watching Garfield on Netflix.  I think he's rubbing off on her.  Thankfully, things always seem to get better as the week goes on.

Aliah got her flamenco skirt and dance shoes at her class on Tuesday.  We need to find her a white shirt to complete her outfit.  I haven't heard if they have a show at the end of the year, but we're hoping to see her perform.  She's one of the oldest kids in her class.  They teach them flamenco very young here, but she doesn't seem to mind being the big kid for once.

When we got back from dance, our neighbor Juan brought over a plate of ham and cheese.  He also invited us over and give us a tour of his house.  Before we left, we got a taste of some sort of liquor from his leather bota canteen.  Shawn and I were trying to figure out what it was.  We are thinking maybe a brandy or a sherry.  It tasted familiar yet not something we'd tasted before.  Juan and his family have brought over all sorts of great gifts since we've arrived, including oranges, avocados, lemons, walnuts, almonds and kale.  We're trying to figure out how we can repay their generosity before we leave.

Haila's class did a scavenger hunt all around Alozaina on Wednesday.  They had to find symbols hidden around town using a map.  One of the symbols was hidden on our block, so we had an unusual amount of foot traffic that day.  They had three hours to complete the task and had to cover a lot of ground.  She said it was super fun but exhausting.

Both girls spent some time with their friends after school on Friday.  Haila had a school project to work on, so she met her friends at the library and then went out with them for dinner.  Shawn, Aliah and I tried Pizzeria Bartoloni for the first time as our favorite pizza shop is temporarily closed.  We let Haila stay out late, and none of us were moving too quick Saturday morning.

When we finally got ready on Saturday, we decided to walk to another small village called Jorox.  The hike was a little more challenging than we expected, but we enjoyed a nice lunch when we arrived.  The restaurant, El Rivita, was built to incorporate a natural cave in it's dining room.  We ordered three plates for the four of us and got way too much food, but the calamari was delicious as was the flan.

There are caves in Jorox that look like they would be great fun to explore.  We need to find out if that's something we're allowed to do.

When we got back to Alozaina, we decided to stop at the big grocery store as we were close.  All of a sudden we see a flock of birds flying toward us, and they are all different colors.  It looked like a rainbow of birds.  It was beautiful!  We headed over to investigate and found out they were painted pigeons.  We tried to take pictures of them flying, but the pics didn't quite capture the sight.

Saturday night was music night again, and the girls decided to sing a duet.  They sang "A Whole New World" which seemed very fitting to me.  They did a wonderful job and (of course) got a round of applause.

We attended a Catholic service on Sunday afternoon at the local parish.  I didn't understand much, but it was still nice to worship with other believers.  Haila told me the sermon was about salt and light.  The church reminded me a little bit of the church we got married in, which has since been torn down and replaced with a Walgreens.  We like to joke that we got married on the corner of Happy and Healthy.  Right now, I feel like we're living there too!  May that be true for all of you as well!!!

This is a picture of Alozaina I took from the edge of town on a Sunday afternoon stroll.
